This Christmas......

I could go on and on about how wonderful Christmas was this year. I really hated leaving and having to come back to work. But I guess that made me appreciate the break more. Nonetheless, I was and am so blessed this Christmas season. I got to see many of my friends from around the US that I havent seen in such a long time. Most of all I got to spend some much needed time with my family. Friday they let us leave work an hour early which was a nice treat. I hopped in my car and headed home. I was the first one home as Jon's flight from Vegas wasnt in yet and Jason wasn't coming home until Sunday. So Friday night I hung out with my parents and watched a few Hallmark Christmas movies (always a favorite). Saturday I slept in! Yeah. Went sledding in the afternoon as you can see in the previous blog pictures, and then got ready for church. Went to the Christmas Ever service with the family and then headed to Griffiths for the annual Christmas Eve Party. Barnes and I took a picture of us holding up the Dixie Stampede cups. Barnes made a sign that said "Go North" in commemoration of our trip to see the stampede after kamp this summer! (so funny) Everybody got together and played a few card games and then the Anderson's showed up so we played Trivial Pursuit 90s edition with everyone. It only took us until 3am to finish but my team won! (of course)
Christmas morning was a little unusual. We didn't open our presents. Instead, we all went to church as a family. Jason made it home from Chicago in time for 9:30 am church! So we went to church and then came home to get ready for our Christmas party. My cousins on my mom's side came and the Griffiths came over. We had a fun time laughing about memories and catching up. Watched a little basketball, ate some good food, and played Phase 10. Opened a few presents and then everybody left. At about 6:00, we decided to open our presents. I was very pleased with what I received. That night instead of going to a movie like we usually do, we stayed in and watched "Little Giants." Classic. Monday morning we opened our stockings which we forgot to do, Eric came over before I left, and I just hung around the house before I had to head back to WDM. All in all, great Christmas! I can't wait to hear about everyones Christmas!! Love you all.

More Sledding Pictures!!

Sledding in a Winter Wonderland

Growing up, the wintertime only meant one thing, fun in the snow. Most winter days you could find us out building snowforts, making snow angels, building snowmen, or having snow ball fights with kids from the neighborhood. But the most fun of all was when my dad would take us sledding. Being an Iowa kid, we had a lot of opportunities to do this. Its amazing now that I'm older, the cold weather seems so much colder but when I was a kid, I could play outside for hours.
Nonetheless, its fun to come home, especially during the holidays, and remember all the fun childhood memories. To look back on old photos, watch family videos, and catch up with old friends. This morning, my brother and I were hanging out downstairs and he says to me " I want to go sledding." I was thinking the exact same thing. The weather was perfect and we had the best kind of snow for sledding. We called up a few friends who were just as excited to go sledding as we were. We rounded up some sleds (it's just something every family has lying around in the garage) and headed out to the hill. I, of course, brought along my camera because you never know when you'll have a Kodak moment, and with sledding, there's always one!. We have countless hours of video tape of us sledding and well, crashing. Gaining enough speed to hit the homemade ramps, now thats a picture waiting to happen.
The snow crew that joined in the fun included Jon T., John B., Justin, Taylor, Kaytlyn, Cindy, John I., and myself. We had so much fun and so many laughs. It's definitely fun to be a kid again. Before I go to warm my feet by the heater, I hope you all have a very Merry Christmas. It's important to remember the reason we celebrate Christmas. Enjoy the time spent with your family and most of all, remember to have fun. Christmas is a time of celebration.

Merry Christmas!

All I Needed to Know About
Life I learned from Santa

Encourage people to believe in you.

Always remember who's naughty and who's nice.

Don't pout.

It's as much fun to give as it is to receive.

Some days it's ok to feel a little chubby.

Make your presents known.

Always ask for a little bit more than what you really want.

Bright red can make anyone look good.

Wear a wide belt and no-one will notice how many pounds you've gained.

If you only show up once a year, everyone will think you're very important.

Whenever you're at a loss for words, say:
"HO, HO, HO!"

3) Christmas is not here
4) I didn't get much sleep and I don't have any vacation to make it up!

IOWA vs WARTBURG

So Wartburg played Iowa almost a month ago now and I'm just posting some of the pics of the game. So I guess, enjoy!

Left: Thats my bro with his back to us passing the ball to a teammate I'm assuming during pre-game warmups.
Above Right: That's Jonny in the center on the Hawkeye!
Right: Warming up some more

Bottom Left: Greg decided that he needed to shoot a free throw!
Below: Good luck, good luck, good luck, good luck
Below right: Me and the Bros.

PS. This morning I locked my keys in my car, with the car running!! Who does that? Well, apparently I do! Oh what a day it has been. I can't wait to go to Klife tonight to see what kind of white elephant gift I walk away with. Last night I got some desk stationary from 1980, a box of practical jokes which went into the garbage, and the book of Esther on cd (which I might add, I will probably use). The anticipation for tonight is mounting!

This is what I feel like after work! Need I say more...

Sunday, December 18, 2005

Today is definitely an "I heart everything that begins with a J" day!! I love those days.

I am obsessed with the song "Cry on my Shoulder" by Overflow. It gets me everytime! I'm not going to post the lyrics because I want you to check it out for yourself. But if you ride in my car with me, I'll sing it to you. (I'd say that's 10 times better!) The song is just so great. That's why I love music so much, it just makes you feel good and it makes my heart happy. Plus, you can pass that "feel good feeling" on to someone else through music. Oh what would I do without it! Sometimes its just the littlest things that make the world go around!

Heres some life lessons I learned today.
1) Open your eyes to the two kingdoms at war contstantly. These wars are not only between heaven and hell but they are in our hearts. Thats why it is so important to guard your heart for it is the wellspring of life.
2) Resist the pull toward the Earthly kingdom of pride, prestige, and power.
3) Pursue the kingdom of Christ with humility, servanthood, and worship. That is so important to remember, especially during the Christmas season.
4) Honor the King of kings with the best gifts you can offer Him. We get so caught up in giving everyone else gifts during Christmas that we forget who's birthday we are actually celebrating! The next time you pray, offer your gift to Christ, whatever that may be. Your heart is a good place to start.

Come to Jesus, Come to Jesus, Come to Jesus and live!

He who be faithful and little will be given much.

I'm not quite sure what happened to the Panthers last night. We had the game
but then we just lost momentum! Shame shame! Anyways, I'm officially done with my
Christmas shopping and can now just relax. I'm feeling a little under the weather
today so I need to just chilax. I can't wait for Christmas to get here! Here's a
fun little poem on what its like to be in Iowa this time of year. Its soooo true!

Christmas time in Iowa

When it's Christmas time in Iowa,
And the gentle breezes blow,
About seventy miles an hour
And it's fifty-two below.
You can tell you're in Iowa
'cause the snow's up to your butt.
And you take a breath of Christmas air
And your nose holes both freeze shut.
The weather here is wonderful,
So I guess I'll hang around
I could NEVER leave Iowa.
My feet are frozen to the ground.

I know I post a lot of lyrics but you're just going to have to deal with it because I love music way too much! I can't wait to see Shawn at Konnection! (we're on a first name basis here)

As I look into the stars
Pondering how far away they are
How You hold them in Your hands
And still You know this man
You know my inner most being, oh
Even better than I know, than I know myself
What a beautiful God
What a beautiful God
And what am I, that I might be called Your child
What am I, what am I
That You might know me, my King
What am I, what am I, what am I
As I look off into the distance
Watching the sun roll on by
Beautiful colors all around me, oh
Painted all over the sky
The same hands that created all of this
They created you and I
What a beautiful God
What a beautiful God
And what am I, that I might be called Your child
What am I, what am I
That You might know me, my King
What am I, what am I
That You might die, that I might live
What am I, what am I, what am I, what am I
What am I
What am I
What am I
What am I
What am I

ps. Go PANTHERS!!!!!!!

Yes it is true.. the Snow Ninja strikes again! Be looking for a special note in your mailbox from the Ninja sometime in the future. I am thinking that it will possibly appear during the dead of winter when the NINJA is at her best! You never know though, that is why she is called a NINJA. She is super stealth, super crazy, and will totally catch you off guard. So be prepared. And don't say that I didnt warn you!

My feelings can best be described by this song:

When peace like a river
Attendeth my way
When sorrows like the sea billows roll

Whatever my lot
Thou hast taught me to say
It is well
It is well with my soul

It is well
With my soul
It is well
It is well with my soul

My sin, oh, the bliss of this glorious thought!
My sin, not in part but the whole, yeah
Is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more,
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul!
And Lord, haste the day when my faith shall be sight

The clouds be rolled back as the scroll
The trump shall resound
And the Lord shall descend!
Even so, it is well with my soul.

What does Love mean?

A group of professional people posed this question to a group of 4 to 8 year-olds, "What does love mean?"

"When my grandmother got arthritis, she couldn't bend over and paint her toenails anymore.

So my grandfather does it for her all the time, even when his hands got arthritis too. That's love."

Rebecca- age 8

"When someone loves you, the way they say your name is different.

You just know that your name is safe in their mouth."

Billy - age 4

"Love is when a girl puts on perfume and a boy puts on shaving cologne and they go out and smell each other."

Karl - age 5

"Love is when you go out to eat and give somebody most of your French fries without making them give you any of theirs."

Chrissy - age 6

"Love is what makes you smile when you're tired."

Terri - age 4

"Love is when my mommy makes coffee for my daddy and she takes a sip before giving it to him, to make sure the taste is OK."

Danny - age 7

"Love is when you kiss all the time. Then when you get tired of kissing, you still want to be together and you talk more.
My Mommy and Daddy are like that. They look gross when they kiss"

Emily - age 8

"Love is what's in the room with you at Christmas if you stop opening presents and listen."

Bobby - age 7 (Wow!)

"If you want to learn to love better, you should start with a friend who you hate,"

Nikka - age 6
(we need a few million more Nikka's on this planet)

"Love is when you tell a guy you like his shirt, then he wears it everyday."

Noelle - age 7

"Love is like a little old woman and a little old man who are still friends even after they know each other so well."

Tommy - age 6

"During my piano recital, I was on a stage and I was scared. I looked at all the people watching me and saw my daddy waving and smiling.

He was the only one doing that. I wasn't scared anymore."

Cindy - age 8

"My mommy loves me more than anybody .

You don't see anyone else kissing me to sleep at night."

Clare - age 6

"Love is when Mommy gives Daddy the best piece of chicken."

Elaine-age 5

"Love is when Mommy sees Daddy smelly and sweaty and still says he is handsomer than Robert Redford."

Chris - age 7

"Love is when your puppy licks your face even after you left him alone all day."

Mary Ann - age 4

"I know my older sister loves me because she gives me all her old clothes and has to go out and buy new ones."

Lauren - age 4

"When you love somebody, your eyelashes go up and down and little stars come out of you." (what an image)

Karen - age 7

"Love is when Mommy sees Daddy on the toilet and she doesn't think it's gross."

Mark - age 6

"You really shouldn't say 'I love you' unless you mean it But if you mean it, you should say it a lot. People forget."

Jessica - age 8

And the final one -- Author and lecturer Leo Buscaglia once talked about a contest he was asked to judge.

The purpose of the contest was to find the most caring child.

The winner was a four year old child whose next door neighbor was an elderly gentleman who had recently lost his wife.

Upon seeing the man cry, the little boy went into the old gentleman's yard, climbed onto his lap, and just sat there.

When his Mother asked what he had said to the neighbor, the little boy said,

"Nothing, I just helped him cry"

When there is nothing left but God, that is when you find out that God is all you need.

I'm a little beside myself. I missed The OC on Thursday because Tivo deleted it before I watched it. Dumb technology. Oh well, I guess, thats what the seasons on DVD are for. Can I really wait that long. Anyways, I suppose I'll just have to let it go. So, enjoy my favorite Christmas song.... ps. you have to sing it while you read it!!

My all-time favorite Christmas song ever.

Oh holy night!

The stars are brightly shining

It is the night of the dear Savior's birth!

Long lay the world in sin and error pining

Till he appear'd and the soul felt its worth.

A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices

For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn!

Fall on your knees

Oh hear the angel voices

Oh night divine

Oh night when Christ was born

Oh night divine

Oh night divine

Led by the light of Faith serenely beaming

With glowing hearts by His cradle we stand

So led by light of a star sweetly gleaming

Here come the wise men from Orient land

The King of Kings lay thus in lowly manger

In all our trials born to be our friend.

Truly He taught us to love one another

His law is love and His gospel is peace

Chains shall He break for the slave is our brother

And in His name all oppression shall cease

Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we,

Let all within us praise His holy name.

I'd like to hear what some of your favorites are!

I am so blessed this Christmas season. Saturday, I didn't even complain because it was snowing. I just enjoyed it! Its amazing how your day changes if you look for the better in things rather than the worst. I got to talk to Julie Penuel Friday night while she was stuck at the airport. I'm sure she was thinking "what a burden that I'm stuck in this airport, but I looked at it as "yeah, I get to talk to Julie and help her pass the time away!" You see how that works. Now you all try it! As we say at kamp, you dont have to do something but you GET to do something! It makes the world a much brighter place.

Now let me inform you of the craziness that took place yesterday. The fam has been gone to Florida you see (i'm still a little bitter) so the mail wasn't picked up regularly. Well come to find out, I got summoned for Jury Duty. However, I obviously didnt get the letter because they sent it to my parents house so I didn't go! I am now a criminal running from the law! I guess it can be looked at as a funny story but it's also pretty serious. When I originally got selected for Jury Duty in October I told them I was moving. They said that until I move, I still have to report and to just call if I got summoned and tell them I moved. Well, I obviously wasn't informed in time, thus, I am now probably in contempt of court and will hopefully just have to pay some fine. I'm going to have to try real hard to find the good in this story to write it off as a laughable matter!
Then, last night we were headed to Wartburg to for my brothers basketball game and we were on a back road out of Nashua. In the distance we could see something in the road but it was too dark to tell. As we got closer, we realized it was a herd of cows!! Can you believe it?! We almost ran into a herd of cows! Only in Iowa! Haha, only in Iowa. When we got to the game, we met up with some family friends and my grandparents were there as well. My grandma is absolutely hilarious at the comments she yells out. She'd often yell out things like "get it, get it," sink it sink it, or "hustle" which is completely normal at a basketball game. Then she started saying things like "interception, we need and interception" to which I had to remind her we wanted a steal, not an interception. Then at one point during the game, Jon (my bro) hadn't gone in so my grandma, (mind you she is an old fashion Lutheran Christian), says " I wish I was a ventrilaquist so I would go down there and say to the coach Jackass, why don't you put somebody else in!" I about lost it when I heard that. After the game, which Wartburg won, a bunch of us went out for pizza at The OP and had a great time. It was a fun weekend to come home to and now I can't wait for Christmas.
I'd also just like to add that my mom has officially gone crazy. I'm not even going to explain, just take my word for it. But you've got to love her though.

I heart marc broussard!!

I could bless the water
But it wouldnt turn to wine
Paint a picture of the sunset
Hanging there in your eyes
But it'd just be some compromise

I could write a million verses
Every word youve heard before
Steal some of dylans best
But it'd leave me wanting to say more
Cause theres so much more

Baby if you could love
somone like me
Theres no end to the possibility

Hopes and dreams push away the pain and regret
But loving you just lets me know
There might be hope for me yet
Hope for me yet

Sometimes when I look back
I dont even know myself
It blows my mind to think that ive found grace in someone else
Baby your grace is something else

Baby if you could love somone like me
There's no end to the possibility
Hopes and dreams push away the pain and regret
But loving you just lets me know
There might be hope for me yet

For a man whos done nothing
I've been blessed with so much more than i deserve
I'm smart enough to know that ive been handed something
Can't put a price on what its worth

Baby if you could love somone like me
Theres no end to the possibility
Hopes and dreams push away the pain and regret
But loving you just lets me know
There might be hope for me yet
Hope for me yet
Hope for me yet

Its Official. The reports are in and this last week was recorded as the coldest first week of December in Iowa, ever! Well, maybe not ever but as far as the records go back which is to the 1800's, Iowa has never had a first week in December be as cold as it has been. Now, this really makes me mad that my family was in Florida without me while I was stuck "weathering" through this cold and snow. One thing is for sure, we do have a lot of snow. I'm just glad I'm in West Des Moines where snow removal is a priority rather than in Cedar Falls where they get to it when they feel like it, whether that’s later that day or NEVER!

My car, Stacy, really stood up to the test of the weather and handled nicely. Although she sputtered a bit this morning, you can't blame her. Having to start running your engine in -15 degree weather the past 5 days with windchill even higher would make me sputter too! Nonetheless, she gets the job done getting me from point a to b, faithfully.

I'm headed home for the weekend to visit the family. Should be an uneventful weekend in Nashua, however, whenever I roll into town, fun is bound to happen! Haha. I hope this Friday finds you all in good spirits and enjoying the Christmas Season. Be sure to blast your Christmas music as loud as you can, bake some Christmas goodies, and enjoy the time with your family.

Don't ask me what is going on in this picture but I think it's obvious that my old roommates are going crazy since I'm not living with them anymore! I know I already posted for today but I couldn't resist!
You shouldn't expect anything. You can just sit and wait and see what happens, or you can go out and make things happen. But, never expect anything.
What is more important, fame or integrity? What is more valuable, money or happiness? What is more dangerous, success or failure? If you look to others for fulfillment, you will never be fulfilled. If your happiness depends on money, you will never be happy. Take joy in the way things are. When you realize you have all you need, that's when you find truth. What I have is all I need. I am happy with it. The Lord is all I need and he is enough. I am happy!

Yeah, its the first day of December!! That means Christmas is just around the corner and you can blast your Christmas music as loud as you want without getting wierd looks from those people who are still recovering from Thanksgiving. I woke up this morning to a winter wonderland of snow. We got about 3 inches or so. It really wasn't so bad because it's not that cold outside and the snow makes things look pretty. But from what I hear tonight, we're supposed to be below freezing temperatures. All the more better reason to travel to a place with a warm climate!!

Wednesday, November 30, 2005

Today I was fortunate enough to witness Agitha's spectacular outfit. She came to talk to me about Wilmer, well actually warn me. She told me he has a reputation around the office as a ladies man so I should watch out. But that's beside the point. Her outfit was something to talk about. For footwear, she decided to go with redish orange high top shoes. I'm not quite sure if they were snow boots but they looked pretty darn close. Then came the green stretch pants. Very 1980 I must say. For a top she chose to go with a cream sweater, always a great combination. And her jacket, well, I'm going to run out and pick up one of these as soon as I'm done here. It was a leopard print fur coat witha hood that had some sort of fur around the rim. SWEET! Oh, and her hairstyle of the day was a simple twist held up by a claw. What a joy it was to witness this outfit. It was definitely the highlight of my day.

I added some pictures to cubicle 840. Just some memories from summers past and old school chums. I miss them all so I decided to decorate my cubicle with photos. I'm an avid picture taker so it just seemed appropriate.

Well, I'm off to the supermarket to buy some supplies. Maybe I'll pick up some treats to place on my desk. Yeah, that sounds nice.

Why am I single?
It takes time to separate the best from the rest!
It gives my mother something to live for.
Justin Timberlake is taken.
Just lucky, I guess.
I’m single because I’m waiting for my perfect match.
The younger you are, the more likely it is that you’ll grow in different directions. But when you’re older, you’ve got a better idea of who the person is and that they’re going to stay that way.

When asked why I'm single, I simply respond:
Thank you for recognizing how high my standards are! or
No one has been smart enough to ask me yet! or
That's a good question, I've never thought about it before!

And I always add a smile with every comment. (man I love the holidays)

This morning I decided to go wonder around the office before my meeting and see what decor others had chosen for their cubicles. That is how I met Agitha. She was all decked out in a bright purple pant suit. One might mistake her for a giant grape popsicle. I let out a tiny giggle, waved, and was on my way. Oh the people of this office, it is no wonder I am so comfortable within the confines of cubicle 840.

And then there's my trainer named Wilmer. He's a young fella, probably around high 30's. He's quite easy on the eyes. In fact, I'm pretty sure he has a crush on me. From the moment I walked into the training room, his eyes were directed towards me. I don't know if it was the side braid or the flowing peasant skirt but there was just something about me today that must have caught his eye. As the training session continued, he kept leaning over my shoulder to use my computer for demonstration. This only continued to confirm my assumptions that he liked me. This put me in a dilemma. What would Rodalpho think about this? All this attention from an older man. I was starting to get anxious to return back to cubicle 840 because I couldn't handle all this new attention.

As soon as the training session was over, I zipped towards the door. As I was about to step outside, Wilmer motioned for me to come over to his desk. Oh man, the blood all rushed from my face and I started to sweat. What could he possibly want? I was almost home free!

Well, it turns out that he just wanted to give me an updated training manual, but he still singled me out. He definitely has a crush on me. I hurried as fast as I could back to cubicle 840. Oh the joys of seeing my own gray chair, my own 5 foot wall divider. What gets better than that??!!
What a dilemma I'm stuck with now. Rodalpho and Wilmer. Oh my life, the perils of my life!
Not to mention it's about 3 degrees outside and windy.

Thanksmas was a definite success with the Trost family. It was so great to see all of my cousins, aunts, and uncles again. I don't think I've laughed as much as I did on Thursday in a really long time. Its amazing how just being around family can make me so happy. I was bummed that Jon, my younger brother, wasn't there because he had basketball in Nebraska. But, it was great to see the rest of my family.
With each passing year, it's becoming increasingly harder to find a time to all get together for both Christmas and Thanksgiving so for the past two years, we've had to combine the two into one, known as Thanksmas. We all get together for the traditional thanksgiving dinner and after we're done eatting, we break for some card games. We usually play one game each Thanksgiving. For instance, two years ago I think it was Hold Em', last year it was Bunco, this year it was Eucher. After a few rounds of cards, its time to make the transition to Christmas.
Every year we read the Christmas story from the Bible and often times, act out the scenes. (yes, its true). We also sing christmas carols and sometimes we collect and offering to donate to a local church or organization.
After the little "service", its time to play that annual game to see who gets to open their presents first. In the past we've played games like Family Feud, Blurt, Bible Trivia, Trival Pursuit (many different editions), we've had scavenger hunts around my grandparents house, played Bunco, word puzzles, all kinds of things. Sometimes it's family against family, but most of the time, we mix it up. This year, it was Trost Trivia. Each family had to come up with multiple choice questions about themselves for the other teams to guess. After playing this game, we determined that the Trost's like to cheat and that it all started back with my Grandma. She would blurt out answers for the other teams and she would change the right answer when a team guessed right! It was so hilarious. You have to know my grandma though to really understand it. And there's my uncle George. He always has a joke for everything so we were all rolling on the floor we were laughing so much. And for the record I'd like to say my team won! Anyways, after the presents are open, its more eatting and playing games. We played some more cards, played Scene It television edition and Harry Potter edition. The fellas watched some football and then ALWAYS James Bond.. ALWAYS!
All in all, it was a good Thanksmas and I was sad to see it go. Jason and I drove back to Des Moines and we went and saw the movie Rent. It's not my favorite musical as far as the plot but the music is so great. I was singing it all day on Friday at work. Then last night I went and saw the musical CATS. Again, not my favorite concept but the music is just soo good. Today, is definitely a day of rest for me. Running some errands, doing a little cleaning, and watching some Hawkeye basketball. Happy Thanksgiving everyone and go Hawkeyes!

you know your stunning
absolutely stunning
and I'm running always running

and now I'm crying
you know only cause I'm caring
and if you were more daring maybe you'd stop staring
and come over and talk to me
and tell me about how you've been waiting patiently
and how you tried but I just turned away
and I'll say, "yeah well you know, I'm shy that way"

shy that way
shy that way
maybe I'm shy that way

you know she's stunning
she's absolutely stunning
but she's always running
but ill catch up to her...

the way she keeps her distance
keepin my interest
so ill keep it consistent

maybe someday, someway, somehow, sometime
we'll get together and we'll break it down
and I'll ask, "why you gotta be so shy, why you gotta be that way?"
well maybe, baby, I like it that way

shy that way
maybe I, like it shy that way
maybe I love you so shy that way

Ok, I'm shy that way...

there's always too much talking
and I wanna just keep walking
and I keep staring, baby, keep staring
though I may not know the right things to say
I'll get it out to you one day

shy that way
shy that way

do you like it? do you like it when I'm shy
yes I like it, yes I like it, when your shy

shy that way

So a few things have happened. The blog is three fold. First off, how do I get on Oprah!!?? I mean, I'm not in the audience for another Favorite Things show. What is it going to take!

Secondly, I lost my first case today. I know, crazy huh, but it happened. So tomorrow should be a fun day!

Thirdly, I have to tell you about my funny story that got me all flustered. Saturday night, Hayley, Michael and I were taking Carson and Reagan to see Harry Potter. I knew that critics were saying it was fairly scary for young children and since Carson is 4, I wanted to call my brother Jason to see what he thought of it. I opened up my phone, scrolled down to Jason, and this is the conversation that transpired:

Jason: Hey
Jill: Hi Jason
Jason: hi
Jill: How are you doing?
Jason: fine
(something strange hit me) ... my brain is thinking something is wrong with the situation and then it hit me, I called Jason Custer instead of my brother Jason
Jill: oh my gosh, you're not my brother
Jason: uh no
Jill: I was trying to call my brother
Jason: whats your brothers name
Jill: jason
Jason: well I can see how you can mess that up
(at this point, I'm seriously flustered and embarrassed)
Jill: uh uh, can I call you back later
Jason: yeah
Jill: okay bye (click)

I was so flustered after that because it totally hit me off guard. Its wierd when you expect somebody to be on the other line and its not them. I'm sure my face was either pale white or bright red because i was just so confused. Its not that I didnt want to talk to Jason, it just threw me!
Serves me right I guess because Jason C. called me one time and Hayl answered the phone pretending to be me. That threw him off a little! haha

Anyways, I called my brother after that and told him the story. He just decided to laugh at me the whole time. Lets just say I have the jason's specified in my phone now.

So thats the 3 fold story. (or should I say A, B, and third for my friend Doug)

Attitude

1. Understanding

That's right. Understanding the importance of a positive attitude. A positive attitude is not shown in some wild-eyed, fanatical, turbo-charged behavior that is going in a hundred directions. No! A truly effective positive attitude is based on reason and a knowledge of the truth -- that all of the research supports the importance of having an appropriate positive attitude.

One person put it this way:
"If passion drives you, let vision hold the reins.
Once you understand the opposing forces warring within you, you come to a knowledge of the truth, And you no longer remain a stone."

Unfortunately, there are so many people who just don't get it. They don't fully grasp the importance of having a strong, healthy, positive attitude.

Of course, the winners get it. The respected TV commentator, Hugh Downs, gets it. He says, "A happy person is not a person in a certain set of circumstances, but a person with a certain set of attitudes."

And 16-year old Anne Frank, the famous Jewish refugee and diarist got it, even though she was hunted, persecuted, and killed by the Nazis in World War II. She wrote, "Everyone has inside of him a piece of good news. The good news is that you don't know how great you can be! How much you can love! What you can accomplish! And what your potential is!"

What about you? If you don't get it or haven't gotten it, I would urge you to make a decision -- today -- that few things in life are more important than having a persistent positive attitude. Decide that right here and now. And don't worry about how you're going to get one. We'll talk about that later.

=> 2. Living

People with a strong, healthy positive attitude live their lives. They really LIVE them -- deeply, fully, each and every day. They don't waste any of their emotional energy muttering such pitiful comments as "Another day, another dollar" or "I've got just five more years, three months, and two days and I'm out of here." In essence, people like that are not living their lives. They're simply enduring them.

In the movie, "Braveheart," Mel Gibson portrayed the famous Scottish warrior. And he summed it up better than most. Braveheart said, "Everyone dies, but not all people actually live."

Again, what about you? Are you truly living your life now? Or are you putting it off -- until the kids leave home, find a new job, buy a different house, or finally retire? If any of that sounds like you, you DO NOT have the kind of positive attitude you should have.

By contrast, I am reminded of one 83-year old woman who wrote to her friend about living life NOW. She exemplified this second component of a positive attitude. She wrote:

"Dear Bertha,

I'm reading more and dusting less. I'm sitting in the yard and admiring the view without fussing about the weeds in the garden. I'm spending more time with my family and friends and less time working. Whenever possible, life should be a pattern of experiences to savor, not to endure. I'm trying to recognize these moments now and cherish them.

I'm not "saving" anything; we use our good china and crystal for every special event such as losing a pound, getting the sink unstopped, or the first Amaryllis blossom.

I wear my good blazer to the market. My theory is if I look prosperous, I can shell out $28.49 for one small bag of groceries.

I'm not saving my good perfume for special parties, but wearing it for clerks in the hardware store and tellers at the bank.

"Someday" and "one of these days" are losing their grip on my vocabulary. If it's worth seeing or hearing or doing, I want to see and hear and do it now.

I'm not sure what others would've done had they known they wouldn't be here for the tomorrow that we all take for granted.

I think they would have called family members and a few close friends. They might have called a few former friends to apologize and mend fences for past squabbles. I like to think they would have gone out for a Chinese dinner or for whatever their favorite food was.

I'm guessing; I'll never know.

It's those little things left undone that would make me angry if I knew my hours were limited. Angry because I hadn't written certain letters that I intended to write one of these days. Angry and sorry that I didn't tell my husband and parents often enough how much I truly love them. I'm trying very hard not to put off, hold back, or save anything that would add laughter and luster to our lives. And every morning when I open my eyes, I tell myself that it is special.

I don't believe in Miracles. I rely on them."

Action:

How would you rate your attitude on a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being "Strongly and Persistently positive despite the circumstances in your life and in your work?

And then, if you score yourself as anything less than 10, ask yourself, "What you are doing to raise your score? Or what will you do to raise your score once and for all?"

Snow Day
You know its going to be a good day when you turn on the television in the morning and the weatherman says "Temperature today....2! Not 82, not even 22, just 2. Oh how I love Iowa weather. Literally, last week it was in the 70's. Saturday and Sunday we had tornadoes, and yesterday, blizzard. Today, well, it was just windy and freezing. I don't know about you but all the changes in the weather make me crazy. Can't Iowa ever just pick a climate, preferably warm, and stick with it.
I shouldn't complain though. I am an Iowa girl and I guess I choose to live here. But, you would think that after 22 years of living in such a crazy state I would get the hint and move south. I'm a tough girl and anyone who has ever experienced Iowa windchill knows you have to be one tough cookie. You learn not to complain and feel blessed when the temperature is in the 20's during the dead of winter. All you can really do is grin and bear it. Meanwhile, while you're grinning, your cheeks get frozen that way, the snot freezes in your nose, and well, even your teeth hurt from the cold. That my friends, is what being an Iowan is all about. We're tough skinned people with big warm hearts. We're friendly to our neighbors and help them shovel snow and scrape their cars. We learn to be thankful for what we have and blessed to share it with our friends and family. Even when the snow is falling, there's always some joy to be found. If you can handle living in Iowa, you can pretty much handle anything!

Tuesday, November 15, 2005

As I peered out the window, my eyes were met with amazement at the winter wonderland outside! The first snowfall of the season! Wow, I'm not sure I'm ready for the snow yet but I guess I have to be. I guess I should introduce myself. My name is Maybel and I am the occupant of cubicle 840. I guess I'm going to be taking you on a journey through my life within the cubicle. It's not exactly what I envisioned for my life but it will do for now. Afterall, there's so many people to meet who have stories to be told. I can't wait for you to get to know some of the regular visitors who come around cubicle 840. And then there are those who, well, lets just stick with the word odd. So far you've been introduced to Rodalpho. I'm still contemplating the whole situation still and analyzing what happened. But, I'm sure there's many more Rodalpho meetings to come. Oh goodness, what will I wear, how should I do my hair. This is serious people. Oh the perils of my cubicle. I hope you stick around for the journey that I take. I'm only one person in this world, or in this cubicle rather, and this is my story.
